Preventing Falls for Seniors

Fall is here, and it’s a beautiful time of year. The weather is getting cooler, the leaves are changing to beautiful hues and it’s the perfect time to don your favorite sweater and enjoy something pumpkin-flavored. But if there is one thing we don’t love about fall is how it is synonymous with falling - something that was at one time not a big deal for youngsters but can cause major health complications for seniors.

Now that we’re approaching fall, it’s a great time to talk about how we can all help to prevent falls for the loved ones in our lives. Luckily, with some simple lifestyle adjustments, preventing falls for seniors is as easy as snuggling up under a warm blanket with a hot cup of tea on a chilly night!

  • Stay Active
The best way to prevent a fall is by continuing to live an active lifestyle. Low impact activities like walking for exercise, tai chi, and yoga are great for increasing balance and coordination which are key in preventing falls.

  • Freshen up your Kicks
Are your shoes giving you all the support you need? While this season is ideal for fashionable shoe choices like booties, be sure to opt for shoes that offer a lot of support and are comfortable. Avoid heels or soles that are slippery, as this will increase the chances of a fall.

  • Do some Fall Cleaning
We’ve all heard of spring cleaning, but nows the perfect time to do some fall cleaning around the home! Make sure to pick up anything around the house that could pose a tripping hazard, secure rugs and make sure steps are clearly visible.

  • It’s all about Support!
Don’t be afraid to use supportive devices! Walkers and canes are a great way to give your loved one extra support as they’re walking around and can be decorated festively to match the season. When walking on the stairs, be sure to use the railing for maximum security.

By following these simple tips, you’ll be well on your way to helping the senior in your life live a healthy and safe autumn.
