Caregivers - Get involved with local advocacy efforts!

When it comes to the well-being of someone who is chronically ill or disabled, it falls on family members or caregivers to provide necessary care. They know and experience first hand the enormous weight that this responsibility adds to their life.

Along with this, they are usually the ones who are able to locate the appropriate advice, services or relief they and the aided senior need to keep going day to day due to these personal experiences.

If you find yourself in this current situation as a caregiver, see the tips below that will help you and the rest of your family get involved in local, state or federal efforts that can help make a difference.

Email a letter to your local elected representative

Your representative relies on you, their peers to help keep them informed on issues in the community that are critical in and need to be addressed. Writing them an email on the issue you are concerned about is a great way to get involved. Make sure the email is written clearly and your message comes across easily.

Make a phone call

If your issues are more time-sensitive, concern making a phone call. The same applies as writing an email about wanting to state who you are, why you are reaching out to them and clearly stating your reasonings. But this is still a great way to get your message out there to the right people.

Visit your elected representative

If you are wanting to establish a more personal relationship, setting up a time to meet with your local representative face-to-face is another good idea. Make sure after your appointment is scheduled, it is always a good idea to send an email confirmation. Meeting face-to-face not only establishes that personal relationship but shows them how serious you are about your message and what needs to change.

Other activities to get involved with

Besides getting in contact with your local officials, there are several other ways to get involved and have your voice heard. You can join a committee that focuses on a single or variety of issues you want to get involved with. Joining online groups can help you to get in touch with people outside your local community can help to give your new perspectives. Or you can always write a letter for your local newspaper for the op-ed opinion section that allows your voice to travel.

With many opinions to choose from when it comes to being a part of local, state or federal issues, you’ll be able to find one that best fits your current situation and help you to get involved!
